Alejandro De Aza took ground balls at first base

Mets OF Alejandro De Aza took ground balls at first base before Wednesday's game.

He received one-on-one instruction from infield coach Tim Teufel early Thursday.

Terry Collins said De Aza recently approached him about working out at first base to try and add depth to the bench.

"Versatility is huge," Collins said Thursday. "And, if you want to play more, if you give us more options, you're going to get a lot more playing time. It's tough when you're a fifth outfielder to get in the lineup."

De Aza, 32, signed with the Mets in late-December in hopes of being a platoon partner for Juan Lagares.
