Alderson gives Mets — and fans — reason to finally believe again

Look, there is no guarantee this will be Donn Clendenon arriving at the trade deadline in June of 1969, adding a professional power bat to a lineup of dreamers, ultimately leading the Mets all the way to the World Series.

There’s no guarantee that this is Fred McGriff igniting the 1993 Braves, or Rick Sutcliffe going 16-1 for the ’84 Cubs, ending a 39-year postseason drought, winning a Cy Young for half a season’s
work.

But Yoenis Cespedes’ arrival is a landmark for the Mets already, certainly in the present context of the franchise, before he ever swings a bat in anger.
