Right-hander Drew Smith knew the Tigers had acquired outfielder Mikie Mahtook from the Rays in January for a player to be named. He did not see foresee being acquired by Tampa Bay on April 28 to complete the deal. He and fellow Detroit farmhands had presumed by then that cash had been sent to the Rays instead of a prospect.
Three months later, the 23-year-old Smith was on the move again this past week. The Mets obtained the hard-throwing reliever from Tampa Bay for Lucas Duda last Thursday.
Smith, who made his organization debut with Double-A Binghamton on Sunday, suggested the second trade caught him even more off guard.
