When Jose Reyes and his agent Peter Greenberg met with Sandy Alderson on June 25, a get-together that led to the Mets reuniting with Reyes — a move that arguably got them their National League wild-card berth — the Mets general manager had a question for the then-free agent.
Alderson mentioned the Mets were pursuing Cuban free agent Yulieski Gurriel, whose primary position is third base. The Mets were a long shot, Alderson opined. But if the long shot came through, how would Reyes feel about playing left field?
Reyes turned to Greenberg and said, “Tell Chris [Leible, one of Greenberg’s deputies] to get me a left fielder’s glove.
