If you tuned in to the Mets’ press conference introducing Juan Soto yesterday, the number 22 was on prominent display. Soto entered the room wearing a necklace with the number prominently displayed, and a few minutes later, he was wearing his Mets jersey with the number on it.
Thanks to the incredible data at both Baseball-Reference and Mets By The Numbers, the latter of which dreamed of exactly this uniform scenario in late November, we know that Soto will be the 34th player in Mets history to wear 22. If all goes according to plan over the next fifteen, he could very well be the last, but let’s take a look back at the number’s history with the Mets.
