Pitchers and catchers report for the New York Mets today. Spring training is now here, but the Mets might not be done making moves. There are few interesting Mets news and rumors surrounding the club, and we're here to detail them. With that in mind, here is our Mets rumors roundup for Feb. 17th.
Bullpen Help?
The Mets won't have Jenrry Mejia next year. They won't have him ever again either, as he's been banned from the MLB for life after another suspension for PEDs. With Mejia a goner, Jon Heyman of CBS reports the Mets are still monitoring the market for bullpen help. Heyman didn't mention any names, and the team might not end up adding anyone.
Mets Won't Deal An Outfielder?
The return of Yoenis Cespedes means the Mets have an extra outfielder in Alejandro De Aza. However, Ken Rosenthal reports the Mets likely won't deal De Aza.
"The Mets, while not ruling out a trade of De Aza, see little reason to push for a deal before the opening of spring training," Rosenthal writes.
There simply isn't much of a market for De Aza, who will earn $5.75 million next year as the club's fifth outfielder. The team would also need approval to deal De Aza before June 15th since he was signed as a free agent. Rosenthal reports the Mets would likely accept a deal if it meant more playing time.
