The New York Mets have officially acquired star center fielder Carlos Gomez from the Milwaukee Brewers, as first reported by Joel Sherman of the New York Post.
New York had been searching for a big bat to add their struggling offensive lineup, and Gomez was one of the best available. He is batting .262 with eight home runs and 43 RBI's in 74 games this season.
Gomez may be a rental as his contract expires after the season, but it shows the Mets' willingness to make a run at the playoffs this year, though they now figure to have the inside track on re-signing him this offseason. They currently sit one game behind the Washington Nationals for the NL East lead.
The Mets will be sending Wilmer Flores, a 23-year-old infielder, and Zack Wheeler, a 25-year-old starting pitcher, to Milwaukee in return for Gomez.
