Wembanyama has rough debut at Madison Square Garden as Knicks rout Spurs

NEW YORK — Victor Wembanyama saw the retired jerseys, soaked in the atmosphere and quickly understood why his coach and so many others told him Madison Square Garden was the best place to play basketball.

"I think no matter how many times I will play here, it will always be special," Wembanyama said.

And it will surely get better.

The No. 1 draft pick's first game at the famed arena was one of the worst of his young career, as he managed just one basket in the first three quarters of the New York Knicks' 126-105 victory over the San Antonio Spurs on Wednesday night.
