The rising Knicks brain who opted against Chasson Randle

PHILADELPHIA — In Clarence Gaines Jr. We Trust.

According to a source, the major reason the Knicks kept defensive forward Maurice Ndour over point guard Chasson Randle coming out of training camp was the lobbying by Gaines, a trusted confidant of Phil Jackson, who has gone from an adviser to vice president of player personnel.

Randle, lighting it up for the Westchester Knicks, was signed by the 76ers on Tuesday. He watched from the bench as Philadelphia came back for a 98-97 win over the Knicks on Wednesday.

Knicks coach Jeff Hornacek said late in training camp he expected Randle to make the club despite breaking an orbital bone.
