No player will ever wear number 613 for the Knicks. That’s because the late Red Holzman, who won that many games as the team’s head coach – most in franchise history – was honored in 1990 with a Knicks jersey featuring that number, raised to the Garden rafters.
Holzman’s Knicks teams included the 1970 and 1973 championships, as well as a Finals appearance in 1972. When the NBA celebrated its 50th anniversary in 1996, Red was named one of the league’s top 10 all-time coaches. Pat Riley, who also took the Knicks to the Finals and won an NBA Coach of the Year award during his stint with the team, joined Holzman as one of the 10 greatest.
