Every Knicks fan can recall where he or she was when John Starks earned a legend’s status at the Garden with a single slam dunk. Starks, coming off an appearance at the 1992 Slam Dunk contest, took matters in his own hands in the waning seconds of Game Two of the conference finals against the Bulls, who were fast becoming the Knicks’ arch rivals.
Sensing a path to the basket from the right side, Starks dusted his defender, B.J. Armstrong, and was met at the rim by the begoggled Horace Grant, a shot-blocking specialist. But Starks skied over him and avoided a streaking Michael Jordan, tomahawking the ball over both men with his left hand.
