Kristaps Porzingis’ lofty new bar: Dirk Nowitzki plus defense

DALLAS — There was one shining moment in New Orleans when Alonzo Gee cut to the basket for what appeared would be an easy slam dunk. Kristaps Porzingis slid over and met the ball perfectly — destroying the attempt as the Big Easy crowd oohed.

Dirk Nowitzki can’t do that.

On the eve of Wednesday’s Nowitzki-Porzingis Euro rematch, Knicks interim coach Kurt Rambis said he hates comparisons of different-era players, but made a point to say the 7-foot-3 Knicks rookie ultimately should impact the game in more ways than the Mavericks legend.

“You look at Dirk’s ability to play at different spots on the floor and shoot 3s — I get the comparison,’’ Rambis said after practice at American Airlines Center.
