Knicks’ second chance rescued Dennis Smith from Mavericks misery

Dennis Smith Jr. finally revealed “it kind of was disappointing’’ and surprising the Knicks didn’t draft him at No. 8 in the 2017 draft. That’s why he views Thursday’s trade as destiny. He just wishes it happened two days earlier.

In another spate of irony, Smith dropped a triple-double on the Knicks last Wednesday — the eve of the Kristaps Porzingis blockbuster. As The Post first reported, Knicks GM Scott Perry and Donnie Nelson were hammering out the deal during the contest.

After two rockier-than-expected seasons in Dallas, the 20-year-old point guard wishes he — as well as DeAndre Jordan and Wes Matthew — would have gotten one chance against Rick Carlisle’s Mavericks this season.
