BEVERLY HILLS, Calif. — It has worked out for Julius Randle, but it will always be bittersweet.
After four seasons loving life as a Laker with a career trending upward, it came to a crushing end when his rookie contract expired on July 1, 2018 and Jeanie Buss’ club renounced his rights.
The Lakers could have kept Randle and still signed LeBron James, but Lakers president Rob Pelinka wanted to have financial flexibility for 2019. Randle, a 2014 Lakers’ lottery pick at No. 7 overall, was sacrificed.
He signed with the Pelicans for a year and now is a Knick after signing a three-year, $63 million deal.
