Earthquake brings entire NBA Summer League to a halt

LAS VEGAS — Friday night’s Pelicans-Knicks matchup was expected to be a showstopper, just not like this.

The summer league game was halted in the middle of play with 7:53 left in the fourth quarter, the Pelicans leading the Knicks, 80-74, after a 7.1-magnitude earthquake shook the Thomas & Mack Center.

As the speakers and the scoreboard hanging from the ceiling swayed and the fans left their seats, the teams remained by their benches before eventually returning to their locker rooms. After a delay of roughly 30 minutes, the public address announcer broke the news that the rest of Friday night’s games in the arena had been postponed, including the finale between the Nuggets and Suns.
