Death of lead detective in Derrick Rose case rocks courtroom

A Los Angeles courtroom was rocked Wednesday by news that the lead detective in the criminal investigation into rape claims against New York Knicks guard Derrick Rose died of an apparently self-inflicted gunshot.

Rose’s accuser looked to be in shock as she turned to her attorney, who shook his head in disbelief, as LAPD Det. Nadine Hernandez’s death was announced in court by the NBA star’s lawyer Mark Baute as the civil trial got underway for the day.

Lawyers for Rose and the woman gave conflicting accounts as to what Hernandez, 44, told them about the investigation, which is still ongoing.
