The New York Knicks have been trying to trade Carmelo Anthony for the past year, but have not been able to. However, even though the Houston Rockets came to them with a trade offer, New York turned it down, according to ESPN's Ian Begley.
If the Knicks are looking to open up cap space to offer more money to free agents, they could open up cap space by trading Courtney Lee or Kyle O'Quinn. Of course, they could also open up cap space by trading Carmelo Anthony. Members of the Knicks organization have told people around the league that, at this point, they remain hopeful that they can trade Anthony. The Knicks and Rockets touched base last month on an Anthony deal but the Knicks were not interested in Ryan Anderson, per league sources.
Anderson has a hefty contract, so dealing Anthony for him doesn't solve the Knicks cap space issue they're trying to get out of by dealing Anthony.
Houston is trying to acquire a third star to play alongside Chris Paul and James Harden following their trade for Paul, and have Anthony has their top target to be that guy.
The Rockets have openly made Anderson available for a trade, and could include either Eric Gordon, Trevor Ariza or Clint Capela in a deal - but it doesn't appear that they are willing to do so. They also have all of their first-round picks from 2019 on.
Anthony averaged 22.4 points and 5.9 rebounds per game this past season.
