The New York Knicks usually attempt to be a major player in free agency every offseason, but that will not be the case this summer.
In an appearance on the "In the Key" podcast, general manager Scott Perry said the Knicks are not going to be active on the open market this summer, opting to wait until the 2019 and 2020 offseasons.
"What we’re really setting ourselves up is for the following summer," Perry said. "Just basically when I came in here in terms of cap space and availability, we’re not going to be a team with a whole lot of cap space this summer. So we’ll be looking for some shorter term, maybe some veteran players that can help some of our younger guys for this summer and really preparing and gearing up for free agency in the summer of ’19 and ’20."
New York is projected to be right around the salary cap for the 2018-19 season assuming all of their current players pick up their player options. Ron Baker has already done so and both Kyle O'Quinn and Enes Kanter have yet to make decisions on their $4.3 million and $18.6 million player options, respectively.
Michael Beasley is also set to be an unrestricted free agent.
2019 projects to have a loaded free agency class, headlined by Kawhi Leonard, Klay Thompson, Kyrie Irving, Kemba Walker, and DeAndre Jordan.
