The New York Knicks have already interviewed a number of prospects at the NBA Combine that they're considering with the No. 9 overall pick, including Mikal Bridges, Michael Porter Jr., and Collin Sexton, but the Knicks still aren't sure what direction they're going to go.
General manager Scott Perry told ESPN that the Knicks are planning to take the best player available regardless of position.
"We’re still in that talent acquisition phase. Obviously, it’s no secret that we could use some more help at the wing position. So when we get down to the ninth pick, at the end of the day, we’re going to pick the very best player,” Perry said. “If it happens to be a wing, then so be it. If there is a clear delineation at another position in terms of talent, then we’ll probably opt to go that direction and get the very best talent we can get.”
As Perry alluded, New York is known to be focusing on the wing, particularly at the small forward position. Both Mikal Bridges and Miles Bridges are known to be at the very top of their wishlist.
The Knicks are intrigued about the defensive upside of a lineup consisting of both Mikal Bridges and Frank Ntilikina, last year's first-round pick. Bridges averaged 17.7 points, 5.3 rebounds, and 1.5 steals per game for Villanova last season.
Porter Jr., the projected No. 1 pick in the draft coming out of high school whose college career was derailed by back surgery, is the prospect New York is reportedly hoping falls to them, but that is very unlikely.
The Knicks are projected to take Mikal Bridges with the No. 9 overall pick in Chat Sports' latest mock draft. Porter is expected to go to the Cleveland Cavaliers at No. 8.
