How close was Phil Jackson and Knicks management to actually signing Steve Kerr to coach to a multi-year deal to coach the team?
Well, here's the Knicks best offer, courtesy of Ian O'Connor of ESPNNewYork.com:

And here's what Kerr eventually signed for as the new coach of the Golden State Warriors:

So, despite how deep into negotiations the two sides were for what has seemed like weeks, one year and $5 million may have been the clincher in Kerr's decision to take his talents to the Bay Area.
