New York Knicks Rumors: Knicks targeting free agent guards

With just two guards currently on the Knicks roster in Raymond Felton and Iman Shumpert, general manager Glen Grunwald is faced with the tall task of adding a few more wingmen to a team with almost no wiggle room in salary.

According to Knicks beat writer Marc Berman of the New York Post, the Knicks have three low-cost point guards in their sights. The favorite is said to be Will Bynum, who had a fairly solid year with the Pistons last season, averaging close to 10 points and 3.5 assists in less than 20 minutes of play. He can contribute scoring off the bench, but that's about it. He has almost no range from deep (26.9 career percent from behind the arc) and would struggle to guard many high schoolers

Devin Harris was once among the best young point guards in the league. He's 30 years old now, and won't come as cheaply as Bynum and certainly not Watson, but he would be a very nice addition to the Knicks roster. In his heyday he averaged 15 and 6, and while not good for that anymore, he still brings the same scoring ability as Bynum and Watson, but also with the passing ability of a true point guard.

Perhaps the best bet is C.J. Watson. Watson has been an excellent spark plug since the Warriors plucked him from the D-League six years ago, and last year averaged seven points in 19 minutes per game with the Nets. Unlike Bynum, he is a very solid three-point shooter (41 percent last year, 38 percent career) and an acceptable defender. He is severely undersized to play two-guard and not a true point guard in any sense of the term, but he makes up for a lot of his shortcomings with incredible quickness.

While Harris seems like the best option, Grunwald could probably sign Watson and Bynum and still have some left over for the same amount of cash it would take to get Harris. With the Knicks as strapped for cap space as they are, Harris would be tough to swing.
