Original New York Knicks player Ossie Schectman has just passed away at the age of 94. He is also the man behind the very first basket scored by the Knicks in the entire NBA history.
Schectman was born in May 30, 1919 and first played at the Samuel J. Tilden High School in Brooklyn and also as an All American right at the Long Island University. He was a six foot guard for the American Basketball League before the New York Knicks signed him up way back in 1946 so as to play for the all new Basketball Association of America. This in turn became the NBA.
It was in November 1, 1946 when he scored the first ever basket for the Knicks’ game which was then against the Toronto Huskies held at the Maple Leaf Gardens. He played for just one season and a total of 54 games with the New York Knicks. He had an average of 8.1 points and ranked third in the league with a total of 2.0 assists.
