You may not be familiar with Pete Carril, but you're probably familiar with something he pioneered - the Princeton offense. Carril was the head coach at Princeton from 1967 to 1996, and often appeared in the NCAA tournament despite not being able to offer scholarships to his players.
After leaving Princeton, Carril took an assistant job with Rick Adelman in 1999 and helped the Sacramento Kings install the offense he helped popularize at the college level. The Kings were one of the most successful teams of the early '00s, and although they didn't win a title, their success proved the offense could work in the NBA.
So why was Carril at Knicks practice on Tuesday? At 83, he definitely isn't in the running to take over if/when Woodson hits the bricks. Woodson's job security is evaporating quickly, and it sounds like Carril was at practice to help Woodson implement more successful practice techniques. Getting back to basics makes a lot of sense after seeing last night's meltdown:
