While all the press will likely go to his teammate, LaMarcus Aldridge, in free agency next summer, Portland Trail Blazers shooting guard Wesley Matthews will be a nice under-the-radar free agent for teams like the New York Knicks to consider.
As Marc Berman of the New York Post puts it, "on the surface, shooting guard isn’t a Knicks need until you consider: Iman Shumpert is a free agent and could be traded at the deadline. J.R. Smith has an opt-out clause he may use to get away from the triangle offense, and Tim Hardaway Jr. hasn’t been a favorite of the new regime because of his defense."

The Blazers have declared their intention to re-sign both Matthews and Aldridge, but Matthews' likely $10 million-per-year price tag might prove financially hairy enough to allow the eager upcoming free agent to fall into the Knicks' laps.
“Definitely, but for now I’m a Trail Blazer," Matthews said when asked if he was excited for his upcoming free agency. "It’s the only thing I see. I’m really not thinking about it.’’
Matthews, 28, has a great defensive reputation along with budding offensive skills. He's averaging 16.4 points a game for the Blazers this season, while shooting 47.8 percent from the field and 39.8 percent from three.
