There have been a multitude of trade rumors surrounding New York Knicks guard Jose Calderon, with several sources indicating that team president Phil Jackson is manning the phones trying to swing a deal.
Yet another trusted NBA analyst, Yahoo! Sports' Marc Spears, has added his voice to the fray, confirming that the Knicks are at least scanning the market for potential takers at the present moment:
"A source said the Knicks are actively trying to unload guard Jose Calderon's contract. Calderon is owed $7.4 million in 2015-16, and $7.7 million in 2016-17."
That's a hefty chunk of change for a 33-year-old point guard facing a downswing in his production, so the Knicks may have to adjust their expectations as to what exactly they can get in return for Calderon.
Here's Kurt Helin of NBC's Pro Basketball Talk with a look at just how much Calderon has struggled to acclimate in the Big Apple:
"Calderon has become the latest in a long line of traditional point guards to struggle to fit in with the triangle (ask Gary Payton about it sometime). Calderon is shooting the three well, 41.5 percent, but is relying on that jumper as just 11 percent of his shots are coming inside 10 feet of the rim (and he’s struggling to hit those). In addition his turnovers are up and his assist rate is not great for a point guard."
All in all, there are plenty of roadblocks in the way of a Calderon trade taking place. However, that doesn't mean that Jackson and the Knicks' brass won't keep plugging away in hopes of pulling off a minor miracle before the trade deadline.
While no takers have emerged as of yet, don't be surprised if a fringe contender desperate for guard depth is linked to Calderon before all is said and done.
