New York Knicks head coach Derek Fisher indicated earlier this week that the Knicks weren't truly interested in bringing former Detroit Pistons and current Houston Rockets big man Josh Smith aboard in free agency.
“Teams are trying to figure out what’s best for them,’’ Fisher said of the Pistons' decision to cut ties with Smith, via Marc Berman of the New York Post. “Not a lot to be surprised about in this business anymore. Stan [Van Gundy] is the coach and president of the team and sends a message to everybody. Teams will do what’s in the best interest and players have to think about it in the same way.
“It doesn’t impact us much so I didn’t really read into it too much at all,” Fisher added, without previous knowledge of Smith having come to terms with Houston.
Smith's reputation precedes him, and his struggles to adapt in previous stops could have proved problematic under the bright lights at Madison Square Garden.
“He’s a cancer,’’ one league scout stated. “No effort, poor shot selection and bad body language.’’
