New York Knicks forward Amare Stoudemire is facing an uncertain future as the team decides if they want to waive him, buy out his contract, and keep him on the roster for the rest of the season.
According to Bleacher Report's Howard Beck, people in Stoudemire's camp would prefer a buyout so he can join a contender before the playoffs:
Stoudemire's representatives are pushing for a buyout, and the Knicks seem inclined to grant it, according to sources. Having plunged into a rebuilding campaign, the Knicks have little use for an aging, sore-kneed former All-Star, and Stoudemire's contract expires after the season. The Knicks have no interest in re-signing him this summer, preferring to use the salary-cap room to chase a younger star.
In the near term, buying out Stoudemire (for a reduced portion of his $23.4 million salary) would open a roster spot—either to sign a D-League prospect or to acquire a player via trade exception. The Knicks have four trade exceptions to use, ranging in value from $1.2 million to $6 million.
The Golden State Warriors and Dallas Mavericks are the two teams that are most interested in Stoudemire, who is averaging 12.2 points and 6.9 rebounds in 24.3 minutes a game so far this season.
