The New York Knicks finished the season with the second-worst record in NBA, but they’re looking to expedite their rebuilding process by signing one or two marquee free agents to play with Carmelo Anthony and one of the top picks in the draft. However, signing the wrong player or players could set the Knicks back even further. Here are the free agents New York needs to avoid this offseason:
PG Rajon Rondo, Dallas Mavericks
Rondo’s short stint in Dallas didn’t go as planned, and it seems very likely that he’ll be headed elsewhere this offseason. Several teams really wanted to find a way to trade for Rondo early in the season, but the Celtics dealt him to the Mavericks. He comes with some major character concerns and questions about how much ability he has left, making him a high-priced headache the Knicks can't afford to deal with.
PG Goran Dragic, Miami Heat
Dragic has said he's interested in joining the Lakers or Knicks once he hits the open market, but the Heat are one of his top choices as well. Miami can offer him more money than anyone else in free agency, meaning the Knicks might have to overpay to get him away from South Beach. That probably means offering him a max contract, which Dragic isn't worth.
SG/SF Mirza Teletovic, Brooklyn Nets
Teletovic’s reputation as one of the best shooters in this free agency class, something the Knicks are desperately looking for. However, Teletovic is not the answer. He shot just 32 percent from three-point range this season and can’t do much else on the court, ultimately making him a liability for a team like New York.
