The New York Knicks stumbled to the worst season in franchise history, but that doesn't mean all hope is lost for next season. Here are three things they have to do to get back to the postseason in 2016:
Smart use of offseason flexibility
New York has the No. 4 pick in the draft and a lot of cap space, allowing them to upgrade their roster quickly. Only four players are under contract for next season (Carmelo Anthony, Jose Calderon, Tim Hardaway, Jr., and Cleanthony Early), meaning the Knicks will have the opportunity to fill the majority of their roster with better players – and they have the means to do so.
Sign a marquee free agent - or two
The Knicks always seems to be pursuing the top free agents every offseason, but the interest is rarely reciprocated by the players themselves. However, that won’t be the case this year. DeAndre Jordan talked about how much he loves New York City after the Clippers visited Madison Square Garden, Goran Dragic put the Knicks on his shortlist of desired teams, and Tobias Harris has stressed his desire to play for his hometown team. Now that there is legitimate interest in the Knicks among these guys and other free agents, New York won’t strike out again this offseason.
Carmelo will be BACK
The Knicks will obviously be better next season with the return of their best player, but Carmelo will also give New York and the experience and go-to scorer they so desperately lacked this year. Many doubt Anthony's ability to lead the Knicks, but he knows his championship window is shrinking and will do what it takes to help New York improve quickly.
