Will Tye learned about the numbers game and having to go to Plan B long before he got to the NFL.
Tye was a highly touted Florida State recruit, a pass-catching tight end with hands sponsored by Velcro. But soon after arriving in Tallahassee, Tye realized he was behind Nick O'Leary, another talented tight end and the grandson of golf great Jack Nicklaus.
So Tye transferred to Stony Brook, where he caught 79 passes for 1,015 yards and nine touchdowns.
“When he got here, I remember thinking, ‘He could be our Wayne Chrebet,’’’ former Stony Brook athletic director Jim Fiore told ESPN.
