What Todd Bowles learned about adversity from Andy Reid

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Jets coach Todd Bowles served on Chiefs coach Andy Reid’s staff for one season when Reid was the Eagles’ head coach.

That 2012 season was a tumultuous one. Reid’s son, Garrett, died of a heroin overdose during training camp. The Eagles finished 4-12 and Bowles, who had been coaching defensive backs, became the defensive coordinator in the middle of the season when Juan Castillo was fired.

Bowles said this week he learned a great deal that year.

“Andy taught me a lot,” Bowles said. “In that year, the one year where he had adversity, being that somebody passed in his family and dealing with everything he dealt with, and to go through a team like that.
