EAST RUTHERFORD -- Consider it a metaphor for a new defense trying to find its footing.

At the end of every media-attended practice this offseason, Giants defensive players -- 300-pound linemen, linebackers and ballhawks in the secondary alike -- line up single file to stand atop a rubber dome and catch a series of passes fired in their direction.

It's something added to the practice script by the first-year coaching staff. But why?

"You never know when the ball is going to come your way," defensive end Dalvin Tomlinson said.
