Former Jets head coach Walt Michaels died Wednesday at the age of 89, his daughter Mary Ann told the Wilkes Barre Times-Leader.
Michaels was the Jets’ coach for six seasons from 1977-83. His final game was the infamous Mud Bowl AFC title game in Miami.
He was also the defensive coordinator when the Jets won Super Bowl III. Michaels, who played one game for the Jets, was a five-time Pro Bowler with the Cleveland Browns.
Michaels grew up in Swoyersville, the coal region of Northeastern Pennsylvania. He is survived by his four kids: Mary Ann, Walt Jr.
