INDIANAPOLIS — Todd Bowles wanted to clear up any problems he had with former offensive coordinator John Morton. The Jets coach let Morton go after one season calling the plays and promoted quarterbacks coach Jeremy Bates to offensive coordinator.
The Jets finished 28th in total offense (305.3), 24th in passing (198.9) and 19th in rushing (106.4) under Morton. There were several players who grumbled publicly and privately about Morton’s playcalling.
Bowles said he promoted Bates because he was a better fit for the offense. And despite firing Morton, Bowles defended him saying he faced some difficulties running the offense.
