Tight end Jeff Cumberland, who went from starter to spare part last season, was released Wednesday by the New York Jets in a long-anticipated move, a league source said.
Cumberland was due to make $1.9 million in the final year of the three-year contract. The entire $1.9 million comes off the books, giving the Jets much-needed cap relief. It should put them about $8.5 million under the cap.
It was a six-year run with the Jets for Cumberland, who made the team as an undrafted free agent in 2010. He became a starter in 2012, a position he held into last season.
