Sam Darnold not officially ruled out as Jets backup Sunday

Todd Bowles is still leaving the door slightly open for Sam Darnold to be active as the backup quarterback Sunday, but the Jets rookie missed his third straight practice Friday.

“It’s possible,” Bowles said. “We’ll see how he feels.”

With Darnold’s sprained right foot still in a boot as of Friday, former Giants backup Davis Webb is trending toward being elevated from the practice squad to the 53-man roster in time for Sunday’s game against the Bills at MetLife Stadium.

Bowles said the Jets will consider “how [Darnold] feels, how we think he compares to having Davis as the backup.
