Ryan Fitzpatrick moves up to head of class

The day began with a locker-room cold-cocking that broke Geno Smith’s jaw, ended the Jet career of Ikemefuna Enemkpali and rocked every green-and-white corner of Florham Park, N.J., all of it happening faster than Sheldon Richardson operates a motor vehicle.

It ended with a low-key Harvard man with a bushy beard standing at a lectern, taking his first questions in his new role as the New York Jets’ starting quarterback, expressing disappointment for incumbent Geno Smith, but recognizing what was ahead of him.

“Here we go, I’m in there,” said Ryan Fitzpatrick, 32, a veteran of six teams and 11 NFL seasons.
