Mike Maccagnan discusses futures of Jets’ Smith, Wilkerson

Geno Smith and Jets general manager Mike Maccagnan

Jets general manager Mike Maccagnan was noncommittal Wednesday about the future of quarterback Geno Smith.

“The jury is still out, but not necessarily in a bad way,” Maccagnan said. “We’re just going to see how it unfolds going forward.”

Maccagnan met with the media, providing a midseason state of the team. He fielded several questions about Smith, who lost the starting quarterback job in August when teammate IK Enemkpali punched him and broke his jaw. Smith has one more year left on his rookie deal after this year, something Maccagnan pointed out, which sometimes is a kiss of death from a general manager.
