Buddy Ryan, who died Tuesday at the age of 85, is best remembered for his innovative work as a defensive coordinator with the Bears, and for his hilariously boastful time as the head coach of the Eagles. Oh, and there's also that time he punched Kevin Gilbride, which happened when Ryan was with the Oilers.
But Ryan's tenure as a pro football coach began in 1968, when he was hired by head coach Weeb Ewbank to be the Jets' defensive line coach. And in that first season with Buddy on board, the Jets went on to win the Super Bowl.
