Jets to release tight end Jeff Cumberland, sources say

The Jets are moving on from Jeff Cumberland.

Sources confirmed to Newsday that the team plans to release the veteran tight end when the league year officially starts at 4 p.m.

It was an expected move that saves the Jets $1.9 million in salary-cap space.

Though Cumberland was their starting tight end in recent years, his production and blocking ability left much to be desired.

Last season he caught five passes (on 14 targets) for 77 yards and no touchdowns.

“It was a fun 6 years w/ the Jets & my teammates,” Cumberland wrote on Twitter.
