In an effort to create salary cap space and get younger, the Jets are planning to cut David Harris, their middle linebacker since 2007, when they drafted him in Round 2.
The news was first reported by ESPN.
The move frees up $6.5 million in salary cap space, with no dead money attached. Harris was scheduled to enter the final year of his contract in 2017. The entirety of his $6.5 million salary cap figure was his non-guaranteed base salary.
Last season, Harris was the Jets' second-longest tenured player, behind center Nick Mangold, whom they drafted in 2006.
