Maybe Geno Smith is not so safe after all.
A week after Jets offensive coordinator Chan Gailey said Smith would be the team’s starting quarterback and there would be no training camp competition, head coach Todd Bowles said there will be a competition … sort of.
Bowles said Smith will start training camp with the first unit and hold onto the starting job as long as he plays well. Ryan Fitzpatrick will be working with the second team.
“I view it as open competition with Geno being the starter,” Bowles said. “It’s his to lose and it’s Ryan’s to take, it’s Bryce [Petty’s] to take, it’s Matt [Simms’] to take.
