We knew the Jets would have to rework some contracts and cut some more players soon to comply with the salary cap. They made one of those moves this week by restructuring the contract of starting left guard James Carpenter.
The Jets converted $3.96 million of Carpenter's $4.45 million in base pay into a signing bonus, according to contract details obtained by NJ Advance Media. The move reduced Carpenter's 2016 cap number from $5.575 million to $3.115 million, thus creating approximately $2.46 million in cap room.
Carpenter's base pay was reduced to $760,000, but that's just an accounting detail.
