The New York Jets announced that they’ve released veteran S Marcus Gilchrist and placed FB Chris Swain on waivers Thursday.
Gilchrist, 28, is a former second-round pick of the Chargers back in 2011. After four years San Diego, Gilchrist signed a four-year, $22 million contract with $8.5 million guaranteed in March of 2015.
Gilchrist was set to make a base salary of $6 million in 2017.
According to OverTheCap.com, releasing Gilchrist will free up $4,625,000 of available cap space while creating $2,750,000 in dead money.
In 2016, Gilchrist appeared in 13 games and recorded 55 tackles, two interceptions, a forced fumble and three pass defenses.
