With quarterback Sam Darnold dealing with a foot sprain that will sideline him for Sunday's home game against the Bills, the Jets on Saturday promoted ex-Giants quarterback Davis Webb from the practice squad to be Josh McCown's backup, for at least one game.
The Jets placed tight end Neal Sterling, who had been dealing with a concussion, on injured reserve to make room on the roster for Webb.
When Darnold is healthy, the Jets will have to make a roster decision on Webb. They would have to waive him -- and hope he clears waivers -- in order to place him back on their practice squad.
