Jets place RB Bernard Pierce on injured reserve, sign RB Antone Smith

The Jets on Tuesday announced that they placed running back Bernard Pierce on injured reserve and signed running back Antone Smith to replace him.

Pierce had been dealing with a hamstring injury throughout training camp.

He was a long shot to make the final 53-man roster anyway, because the Jets already had Matt Forte (who has a hamstring injury of his own), Bilal Powell, and Khiry Robinson ahead of him on the depth chart.

The Jets' other current running backs are also roster long shot guys: Terry Williams, Dominique Williams, and Romar Morris, plus Smith.
