The Jets cleared some salary cap space Wednesday afternoon just before the opening of free agency by releasing tight end Jeff Cumberland, a source said and Cumberland confirmed on Twitter.

The move clears $1.9 million in cap space. The Jets entered the day with just $6.4 million in cap space, and some of that disappeared with the Matt Forte signing.

Cumberland spent six seasons with the Jets. He has been a starter since 2012, when he had 29 catches for 359 yards and three touchdowns. He followed that up with 26 catches for 398 yards and four touchdowns in 2013, and 23 catches for 247 yards and three TDs in 2014.
