Jets’ newly signed QBs both lose backup competition

The winner of the Jets’ veteran backup quarterback competition is…no one.

The Jets released both Matt Flynn and Josh Johnson on Saturday as the team trimmed its roster to 53. Flynn tweeted his goodbye to the Jets, announcing his release. A source confirmed Johnson had been released.

The Jets brought both Flynn and Johnson in during training camp after Geno Smith suffered a broken jaw. The team expects him to miss the first four games of the season.

With Ryan Fitzpatrick as the starter, the Jets wanted a veteran to sit behind him while Smith heals.
