Jets linebacker likely needs surgery that would end year

Jets linebacker Lorenzo Mauldin likely will need season-ending back surgery due to a herniated disc, Todd Bowles confirmed Thursday.

Mauldin will get a second opinion, but it is believed he will need the surgery.

A third-round pick in the 2015 NFL Draft, Mauldin has been out since training camp and currently is on injured reserve. The Jets had hoped he could return this season, but that now appears doubtful.

Bowles said the injury was up and down the past few weeks before it “took a turn for the worse.
