Jets hire Jeff Hammerschmidt as special teams assistant

SAN FRANCISCO — The Jets on Friday officially announced the hiring of Jeff Hammerschmidt as their special teams assistant coach.

It’s the second coaching move they’ve made this week after a quiet offseason. The Jets also hired Brant Boyer as their new special teams coordinator, replacing the recently fired Bobby April.

Hammerschmidt, 46, had spent the past four seasons as Colorado State’s special teams coordinator. The Rams averaged 25.1 yards on kickoffs and 12.6 yards on punt returns in 2015. During his time at Colorado State, Hammerschmidt also coached running backs and tight ends.
